The Big House has hosted many special events during the years. Most recently, two athletic events have captured the attention of fans around the state and world wide. On December 20, 2010, Michigan defeated Michigan State 5-0 in a game called “The Big Chill at the Big House (a.k.a Cold War II).” On January 1, 2014, the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2, during the NHL Winter Classic. On August 2, 2014, Manchester United defeated Real Madrid 3-1, during the Guinness International Champions Cup. This particular game broke attendance records for soccer in the United States (college gridirons).
